Gotta love California

Although I'm pretty removed from the Prop 8 efforts, being in Utah and all (and even, horror of horrors, a registered Utah voter! shudder. At least I still have the California driver's license, license plates and cell phone number!), my family back home has been plenty involved, my 73-year-old grandfather in particular. Grandpa is funny, charismatic, and generally a likeable person, so he is a natural choice for going door-to-door in his Oceanside neighborhood, asking his neighbors to vote yes on Prop 8.

Anyway, to assist them in these door-to-door efforts, Grandpa and his companion-for-a-day had a list of registered voters (fyi, these are public records, so don't get your panties in a bunch about "invasion of privacy"). As they approached one of the houses, Grandpa realized that the registered voters there were both women. He wisely decided to change his opening line from "We are here to ask you to vote yes on Prop 8" to "We are here to ask you what you think about Prop 8." Good move, Grandpa, because the door was opened by a 6-foot-plus woman and her very large Rottweiler. Grandpa asked her what she thought about Prop 8, and she replied, "Never heard of it." He went on to explain that it is an amendment that would recognize only marriage between a man and a woman. The woman said, "I disagree." Grandpa thanked her for her time and they left.

When they talked to the woman's neighbors, the neighbors just started cracking up and asked if they'd already been to her house. Grandpa said yes, and the neighbors said, "That woman who answered the door? She used to be a man."

Ah, California...
